Is Your Caravan Secure?

Top of the range caravans and motorhomes are now being targeted by thieves almost as much as high-end luxury cars. The trend has been driven by the overwhelming demand for leisure vehicles and the relative ease with which they can be stolen.

Caravanners are therefore being warned to adopt extra security measures to ensure that they do not become the victims and have their holiday plans ruined. The standard identity markings on caravans in particular are easily removed which means that the majority are never recovered. It seems that whilst there have been big increases in online searches looking for caravans for sale there has been only a small increase in searches for tracking devices. Vehicles fitted with a tracking device have a 95%  recovery rate and attract cheaper insurance premiums. In some cases, the insurer will require a tracker to be fitted for cover to be valid.

According to vehicle tracker specialists, Trackershop recent research has revealed that just 13% of motorhomes and 6% of campervans have trackers installed with only around 50% of all types having any sort of alarm fitted. As well as trackers, caravanners can increase their chances of having a stolen van returned by having the Vehicle Identity Number etched on all the windows and keeping a record of the Central Registration & Identification Scheme (CRIS) number. All owners of touring caravans should ensure that they have a hitch lock and wheel clamp in use whenever the unit is left detached from the towing vehicle.

Always check on the terms of your insurance policy to see what level of security is expected by your insurance company. Finding out after the caravan has been stolen could be a very expensive mistake.
